Baahubali's Second Poster Reveals Prabhas As Shivudu
The marketing team behind S.S. Rajamouli's (Eega) Baahubali have really begun to turn up the heat, and after nearly 2 years in production we're starting to get solid looks at some of the amazing imagery the film has to offer. Today we get our first official character poster for Shivudu, the film's protagonist played by Prabhas. The image is strong, as is Shivudu by the looks of it, and does a fine job of continuing to create buzz for what is likely to be one of India's biggest hits of the year both at home and abroad.Baahubali didn't appear out of nowhere, though, Rajamouli has been working toward this kind of breakout success for a while in a Telugu film industry mired in predictability. While he's worked within the confines of the Tollywood film machine for over a decade, even back to his earliest films you can see a touch of daring and the urge to move beyond that few Tollywood filmmakers have, and even fewer who work within the mainstream. Rajamouli has made a solid career out of creating mold-shattering star vehicles for Tollywood royalty like Jr NTR (Yamadonga), Ravi Teja (Vikramarkudu), and even Baahubali's star Prabhas (Chatrapathi). However, it was with Eega, a film with huge ambitions, an amazing high concept, and absolutely no big time star power, that Rajamouli finally made his mark on the world. Baahubali follows up on that success with this most ambitious project in Telugu cinema to date. Helping him to conquer the world outside of Andhra Pradesh is Bollywood big-shot Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, one of the biggest film production houses in India. Baahubali will be released worldwide day and date in three languages, which is not uncommon for big budget films, what is unusual is getting a Bollywood production house involved at this early stage. Eega, retitled as Makkhi for the Hindi market a few months after its initial release in the summer of 2012, was among the very first truly successful south Indian films on North Indian screens, which piqued the interest of the Bollywood establishment and is going to allow this film to spread much further than it could have one its own.The excitement from all over the world is palpable, and for those of us who are intimately familiar with Rajamouli's ambition and history of radical innovation, it's going to be a long 10 weeks until Baahubali opens in July. In the meantime, we have Prabhas' abs to keep us company.

It wasn't quite the first look of 'Devasena' everybody was expecting to see. But given that Anushka will be appearing only for a brief part in Baahubali -The Beginning, this probably is her role in this Part.
Rajamouli had tweeted about Devasena in his tweets:
'First part of #Baahubali, The Beginning, she appears briefly in a completely different avatar…'
'Tortured and held captive for years, are the embers of her spirit finally dying ???'

BAAHUBALI's Third Poster Showcases Anushka Shetty As Devasena
The hits just keep on coming for Baahubali.
This latest character poster reveals the character of Devasena, described by Rajamouli as "tortured and held captive for years," played by Anushka Shetty. While Anushka hasn't done a any work in Hindi cinema, she's well known as a leading lady in both the Tamil and Telugu film industries. Twitch readers may recognize her from the Tamil Singam films where she played Suriya's love interest/wife. More recently she's been filming another period film, Rudramadevi, in which hers is the title character. Baahubali shares more than just an actress with Rudramadevi, the films also share Peter Hein, south India's most famous action choreographer and fashion plate, I'm sure we'll be seeing more from him as footage from Baahubali begins to appear on May 31st.
We've got several more character posters to go, so watch this space for the latest. We still haven't seen Rana Daggubati, Nasser, Tamannah, or Sudeep. CREDITS : TWITCHFILM.COM

An article on 'Baahubali' in the International Magazine 'Variety'.
At the edge of the tiny village of Anajpur on the outskirts of Hyderabad in southern India are a pair of imposing gates with high walls on either side stretching as far as the eye can see. Inside is a vast property encompassing forts, palaces, prisons, mosques, temples, airports, gardens and anything else a filmmaker might dream of using as a backdrop for a big-budget extravaganza.
Welcome to Ramoji Film City, which, at 2,000 acres, is one of the largest studio facilities in the world. It’s not difficult to discover what’s currently filming: Dominating the Ramoji skyline these days is an immense bronze statue that bears the likeness of actor Rana Daggubati, who plays the antagonist in “Baahubali,” a historical action-adventure set in medieval India. The project is slated for a two-part release, with the first film due on 4,000 screens around the world, including 200 in the U.S., in late July. Producer Arka Mediaworks has enlisted former Directors’ Fortnight topper Francois Da Silva to rep the movies at the Cannes market.
Hugely popular star Prabhas also toplines the film, budgeted at $40 million — easily the most expensive production from India, outstripping 2010’s “Enthiran,” which reportedly cost $34 million.
These figures might seem small by Hollywood studio standards, but in India, a dollar stretches a long way, and what winds up on the screen, if done right, can rival some the best production values in the business.
Visual effects supervisor V. Srinivas Mohan is no stranger to big-budget spectaculars, having been in charge of “Enthiran” as well other high-profile pics. He says that vfx on Indian movies can achieve 80% of an “Avatar”-like shot for one-quarter the cost. What Mohan and his team are striving for is to deliver the remaining 20% to reach global standards.
“Audiences are used to watching photo-realistic effects in Hollywood films,” Mohan says, “and the challenge was to re-create that on an Indian budget.”
Ramoji itself has chipped in to try to make that happen, providing credits for infrastructure and equipment for “Baahubali,” as well as non-equity financing for roughly half the budget of the film, produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni for Arka Mediaworks, largely a TV shingle, but also co-producer of 2011’s “Once Upon a Warrior” with Disney India. Arka put up 10% for the film, with the rest coming from Indian territory pre-sales, thanks to the track record of hit-making director S.S. Rajamouli.
Mohan’s task has been to realize Rajamouli’s vision — one that has included a more than three-mile-high waterfall and epic battles with armies of hundreds of thousands, along with horses, elephants, chariots and giant catapults. “When the director says ‘I need it huge,’ ” Mohan says, “there is no end of that huge.”
Mohan, along with Rajamouli and production designer Sabu Cyril, began pre-production in 2012. Principal photography began in 2013 and continued until the end of 2014 at Ramoji and locations across India and Bulgaria.
Almost 90% of the film requires vfx work, with the live-action shooting augmented and expanded in post. Some 600 artists are executing the f/x at 18 facilities around the world, led by Makuta and Firefly in Hyderabad, Prasad EFX in Hyderabad and Chennai, Tau Films in the U.S. and Malaysia, and Dancing Digital Animation and Macrograph in South Korea.
Rajamouli’s previous blockbusters had strong elements of fantasy and pageantry, but nowhere near the scale of “Baahubali.” But the director calls the battles, bombast and big budget a “superficial layer.” “Beneath it all are human emotions that drive the film,” he says.
“Baahubali” will be released in the Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam languages. The second part is due in spring 2016. Arko plans to distribute the films in Asian markets like Japan, China and South Korea, and also parts of Europe where Indian movies don’t traditionally play. The ancillary strategy includes a spinoff TV series, graphic novels and a clothing line. Arka is also in discussions with tech giant AMD to create a “Baahubali”-themed Oculus Rift experience.
Despite its global ambitions, “Baahubali” remains very much an Indian product. Star Daggubati says the film will give international audiences a taste of Indian folkloric culture in same way “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” exported China’s mythology. “I haven’t seen a film of this scale that is so true to our culture,” he notes. “The weapons are very Indian, and the way we fight is very Indian. It’s portraying our culture to the West.”CREDITS : VARIETY.COM

Even before a couple of months of its release, Baahubali is making all the right noise not just in the Telugu states and across India but even globally. Recently, Baahubali was featured in the reputed international news agency for entertainment, Twitch Film. Now, the magnum opus gets further more appreciation from Variety, yet another popular entertainment and news agency.
In its special feature, Variety explained in detail about the film's Hollywood standard making and the tedious VFX process on a minimal budget, when compared to gigantic budgets Hollywood studios dabble with. Most of the VFX work is being done in as many as 18 world class VFX studios across several countries, with more than 600 experienced technicians working round the clock.
Eyeing a wide release for the film in Asian countries and even in Europe, the makers of Baahubali have teamed up with leading professionals for the most prestigious film festival in the world, Cannes Film Festival, and participate in the marketing section of the festival to find international distributors for the film. Baahubali is set for a shattering release in more than 4000 screens across the world this July.

The third poster, which was released on 6 May, introduced the character Devasena, played by Anushka Shetty. When he made his debut as an idealistic politician in Sekhar Kammula's Leader, Rana Daggubati quickly earned the reputation of being this lanky, young, new-age actor who wears a "wooden expression" and has a penchant for picking "hatke" roles. Today, just five years later, Rana seems to have metamorphosed himself into the quintessential action hero, of epic proportions — pun intended!
With his upcoming films —Baahubali and Rudhramadevi, Rana is clearly moving into a zone where his daunting, almost Hulk-esque personality becomes a key element in the kind of roles he is offered. Quite an evolution. Tell him that, and Rana laughs it all off as happenstance!
"It's the story that finds the actor, not the other way round..." he says, philosophically. "When I started my career, I wanted to do interesting stuff and so people approached me with unconventional roles, like the ones in Leader or Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum, or even Nenu Naa Rakshasi. There was no reference to these characters; as an actor, that was completely new for me. Of late though, I have been seen in a lot of action films — so, now people think I'm more comfortable doing only action roles; that I have fashioned myself into some action hero. The truth is that I haven't really done romantic entertainers so far... May be once I do, people's perception of me will change. yet again," he says, laughing.
Whatever may be the reason for his two back-to-back epic films, fact remains that this new 'epic hero avatar', with bulging muscles and period costumes, quite becomes the strapping actor. "Let me be clear about this one — there is nothing heroic about my role in Rudhramadevi. It's an out-and-out Anushka's film; I'm just a supporting character in the story," Rana is quick to point out. "it's the story of the queen Rudhramadevi; I play a Chalukyan prince Veerabhadrudu. He is someone who believes in women power and is more than happy to stand beside the queen and support all her endeavours. I'm happy that a film like this is being made in Telugu. We have a chance to portray our own history on the big screen, a feat which has become rare in Telugu cinema," he adds.
Baahubali on the other hand is in "a different zone altogether," says Rana. "Here, I am an epic villain; not a epic hero! It's a fictional tale about warriors, kingdoms and struggle for power. And I play a mean, bad ass character Bhallaladeva. In fact, I would put him in the league of Duryodhana from Mahabharata or Ravana from Ramayana, in terms of how the character has been dealt with. And I'm confident that Bhallaladeva would be rated among the greatest villains of all time in Indian film history."
Admittedly, the actor has a penchant for history and larger-than-life characters on screen. "I grew up watching films of NTR, Krishna, ANR, Sivaji Ganeshan among many others. I learnt a lot about history and mythology through films. So, if someone asks me what Lord Krishna looks like, I would show him NTR in Krishna's avatar; or for that matter Alluri Sitaramaraju is also Krishna for me. It's amazing how much films can teach you about life in general. Since I grew up in a filmi family, the impact of such epics and mythological films is even more on me at a subconscious level," Rana says, matter-of-factly.
While the sequel to Baahubali is in the pipeline later this year, for now, Rana is pretty excited about his ongoing Tamil film, a remake of Bangalore Days. "it's such a relief to wear normal clothes instead of an armour when I go to a film set," he quips. "For the first time in my career, I'm playing a role where I am soft-hearted. I fell in love with Fahadh's role when I saw the original version in Malayalam and I badly wanted to do it. Ironically, I'm not part of the Telugu version of Bangalore Days. See, that's what I mean when I say the story finds you... I'm happy that I'm part of this story; never mind the language."
